Five Days to Go: Thursday, Jan. 21, 2010
Construction of the blocks is complicated: Snow is made on the ski hill, trucked down, dumped, and then blown into forms. Residents stomp the snow several times to ensure it is hard packed. Its final density is about one half that of solid ice. The blocks are now completed and awaiting their transformation by teams from around the world. The two out-of-staters (Minn. and Mass.) will arrive tomorrow. Dan S. has already sent a pile of new tools, including some interesting rasping tools made from a toilet seat.
